Who I Am

Hey everyone! Hope y'all are having a great week so far!

In my last post, I talked about Psalm 139: 7-12 and 16-18. But today, I wanted to take a minute and write about verses 13-16. God has brought these verses to my attention several times this week.....and it's something I have seriously needed to be reminded of. Verses 13-16 state,

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

These verses continue what verses 7-12 started. God is the ultimate Creator and controls all. But I want to dig deeper into these verses and talk about our identity and who we are.

To start out, I want to give a quote from an incredible book, Trusting God by Jerry Bridges. The quote says, "The first part if verse 13 says, "For you created my inmost being." The Hebrew Word for "inmost being" is literally kidneys. The New International Version Study Bible says the word was used in the Hebrew idiom for "the center of emotions and of moral sensitivity." David, then, is essentially saying, "You created my personality." Not only did God create David's physical body, He also created His personality. David was the person he was because God created him that way, physically, mentally, and emotionally. And just as God was personally involved in creating you and me."

Putting it simply, when God was forming every part of our physical body in the womb, He created our personality, who we are, our bends, strengths, and desires.

In verse 14, David praises God for who He is. He acknowledges God's greatness and how wonderful His works are. Is this not the attitude we should have? Instead of complaining about our features, our personality, our body, should we not thank the one who made us and live in that truth?

Once again, verse 15 speaks of God being there before David was even born. God had every single part of David planned out before He even formed him.

Verse 16 is one of my favorite verses. How beautiful is the thought that before any of our being was formed, God had every single day of our life planned? His perfect plan was decided longgggg before we were ever born, before the beginning of time.

Every single part of who we are, God created in the exact way He wanted it. He made no mistake, for He is perfect in all He does. But I do want to give a quick word of warning. The sinful parts of our being are not to be accepted. We are to continue to grow more and more into the image of Christ and put off the old sinful self. Just because we are more prone to one sin, it doesn't make that sin ok because we were "made" that way. Also, another thing we need to be careful of. While we are formed in God's image and He made our personality and being exactly how He wanted to, we cannot find our identity in our skin color, gender, features, or personality. Our identity should only be found in Christ alone, if we are believers. The only identity we have is that we are redeemed and one with Christ. Nothing else matters.
